How Cassandra identifies home directory

I have installed cassandra 2.1.6 in ubuntu system. While going through the document I came to know the default data storage in cassandra is changed to $CASSANDRA_HOME/data/data.
my home directory is /home/vm1/ and I have created a folder named cassandra in it.
/home/vm1/cassandra.
I have unzipped the tar file in this directory /home/vm1/cassandra/apache-cassandra-2.1.6
My question is how does cassandra recognizes this path as CASSANDRA_HOME. Where is it defined. I can see the details in the path and SSTABLE data is getting stored in it.
Find attached screenshot attached. Thanks for helping me in this query.
